Alice in Wonderland is one of the most popular characters from a children's book and movie. A lot of people like to dress up as Alice for Halloween, conventions or other costume parties or events. Unfortunately, Alice in Wonderland costumes can be hard to find and, when you do find one, they can be expensive. However, with some moderate sewing skills and a little bit of time, you can make your own Alice in Wonderland costume for a fraction of the cost. Plus, if you make your own costume, you can customize it any way you want and you will be guaranteed to have the right size.

  1. To make the bodice, cut out two pieces of blue fabric that are each as wide as the widest part of your torso and long enough to reach from your throat to your waist.
  2. Line up the two pieces of blue fabric, right sides together, and sew up the left and right sides, leaving an opening of about 6 inches at the top of each side for the arm holes.
  3. Sew up the top of the bodice (right above the arm holes), leaving a 6 inch opening in the middle for the collar.
  4. Sew two darts on the front of the bodice, starting at the tip of the bust and going down to the waist. Sew two more darts on the back of the bodice in apporximately the same place as the darts on the front.
  5. For the skirt, cut out two pieces of blue fabric that are each 1 yard square. Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides together, and sew up the left and right sides of the fabric.
  6. Hem one of the raw edges of the skirt and sew a gathering stitch in the other raw edge. Gather the top of the skirt until it is the same width as the bottom of the bodice.
  7. Sew the top of the skirt to the bottom of the bodice. Starting at the top of the bodice, cut a straight line down the back of the dress, stopping about 3 inches below the top of the skirt. Sew the zipper into this hole at the back of the dress.
  8. For the sleeves, cut two pieces of blue fabric that are each 6 inches by 24 inches. On each piece of fabric, sew the two shorter edges together, right sides facing each other, to form a tube of fabric.
  9. Sew a gathering stitch into one of the raw edges of each sleeve and gather the edge until it is the same size as the arm holes. Sew the gathered edge of the sleeve onto one of the arm holes.
  10. Hem the other raw edge of each sleeve, leaving an opening of about 1 inch. Cut a piece of elastic that is just wide enough to fit around your bicep.
  11. Thread the elastic through the hem of the sleeve, gathering the fabric as you go. Sew the two ends of the elastic together and sew the opening in the hem closed.
  12. To make the collar, cut out 2 half circles of white fabric that are each about 8 inches long at the base and 4 inches wide in the middle. Sew the two half circles together, right sides facing each other. Leave an opening of about 1 inch.
  13. Turn the collar right side out and hand stitch the opening closed. Attach the collar (flat side down) to the collar of the bodice, allowing the two ends of the fabric to meet at the front of the throat.
  14. Pair the dress with a white apron, white tights, black shoes, and a black headband.
