How to Make a French Bustle For Wedding Dress

After the wedding concludes, many brides choose to bustle their gowns for the reception. This lifts the train from the floor, protecting it from being stepped on and keeping it out of the way for dancing. There are a few ways to do this, but one romantic style is the French bustle, also called an underbustle. French bustles are ideal for gowns with long trains and heavy fabric, as they are more stable than American overbustle.

1. Measure you dress from the bottom of the train up to the point where the skirt first meets the floor, and push in a pin there. This is the length of your train, and its longest point is along the center seam line, even if there is no seam present. Ensure that your marking equally splits the train’s width at its location.

2. Draw the pinned section up underneath the gown until the hem of the train is even with the hemline of the front of the gown. Pin the train in place.

3. Hand sew a 1-inch plastic ring to the marked point closest to the gown’s hemline. When sewing, keep the stitches on the seam’s selvages, as this will prevent them from being seen.

4. Sew two 9-inch lengths of grosgrain ribbon to the marked point at the waistline. If your gown’s train is very long or wide, locate the two side back seams to the right and left of the middle back seam and sew a plastic ring and two lengths of ribbon at each seam in the same way.

5. Loop one length of the ribbons through the plastic ring to draw the skirt upwards. Knot the ribbons at their base to keep the bustle secure.

How to Bustle a Wedding Gown Train

A lot of dresses come with long trains attached to the bottom of the dress. Trains may be attractive in pictures, but they can be a problem during wedding. Therefore, bustling the gown’s train after the ceremony is the best solution. The two most common bustle styles are the French and American bustles. The French bustle, or under bustle, is best for longer trains and heavier fabric, as its rigging is able to support a lot of weight. However, the American or over bustle is well suited for delicate fabrics and short trains.

1. Wash your hands with soap and water. Dry thoroughly. This will prevent any dirt from getting on the wedding gown train or dress itself.

2. For ballroom-style bustles, lift the loops of the train up, securing it to the carefully positioned buttons at the waist of the dress. Each loop will have a button with the train becoming the same length as the wedding gown.

3. For a tufted bustle, lift the pickup points of the train, which contain a hook to the anchor point, often halfway between the pickup point and the waist of the dress. Repeat for each tuft until all pickup points have been lifted from the ground. The train now looks like extra tufts on the wedding gown.

4. For a French bustle, tuck the train up beneath the skirt of the wedding gown, securing it in place with ribbons that allow you to knot them as tightly, or as loosely, as you want. No one will be able to see where the bustle is attached as it will be underneath the skirt, adding dimension to the back view of the wedding gown.

5. For a pickup bustle, lift the one pickup point to any of the buttons on the back of the dress. This style allows the bustle to be as high or as low as the bride wants.

How to Install a Bussel in a Wedding Gown

The wedding dress bustle is the solution to a dragging dress. Long fabric on the back of the dress, called the train, is traditionally desired for chapel or church ceremonies. After the ceremony, the train is lifted in a style that is still flattering to the dress and bride.

  • Determine where your bustle will go. Measure 14″ to 20″ down from the waistline in the back of the dress. By pinching the fabric between those measurements and raising it up to the waistline, establish which measurement is the correct length for the train of the dress to be bustled and still level with the hem of the dress. Mark this measurement by placing a needle into the fabric. Do not mark your wedding dress fabric with any type of marker or chalk.
  • Sew the hook onto the waistline of the dress, so that the majority of the fabric weight is held by looping the eye over the hook. Determine the middle point of the back of the dress’s waistline. Using a needle and white thread, sew the hook securely onto the middle point.
  • Sew the eye onto the back of the dress on the spot marked by the needle you previously placed into the dress. The eye must be pointed upward, so that when the dress is un-bustled, the loop of the eye is pointed up.
  • Test your bustle. If you are worried about its strength, add an adjacent hook and eye closure next to the one already installed.
  • To finish, sew a covered button directly below the eye closure on the train of the dress. This will allow the button to cover the hook and eye closure when bustled.

How to Make a Detachable-Train Wedding Dress

Sometimes the perfect dress doesn’t have the perfect train, and when it’s a wedding dress, it does have to be perfect. With the cost of dresses reaching to the tens of thousands of dollars, some brides are opting to customize an existing dress they love with a detachable train. Detachable trains aren’t as popular as they once were, but they seem to be making a comeback. The idea is that the train can be removed after the ceremony, so there’s no need for bustling or potentially ruining the train at the reception…not to mention that the dress that remains is fabulous.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need
Dress
Muslin
Fabric for train
Hook and eye closures
Thread
Needles
Sewing machine
Embellishments such as lace, pearls, sequins, etc.
Instructions

1.Choose or make the wedding dress. Keep in mind when looking at pre-made dresses or patterns to make a dress that the best candidates for detachable trains are those that have some sort of detail at the waist. This is so the hook and eye closures will not be seen when the train is taken off. This detail doesn’t necessarily mean that the bodice and skirt of the dress are seamed together, just that there’s some detail on the back of the dress. If the dress is being made at home, that makes things simpler, since it’s easy to customize during sewing.

2.Buy fabric that matches or goes with the dress. The same goes for any lace that’s used for detailing the dress and train. To determine the amount of fabric needed, use muslin to create a pattern. This way, the shape and length can be fit to the bride. If the train is wider than the width of the fabric, use the two seam method to fix this issue. The two seam method means that there is a seam on each side of the train, rather than one down the middle, where it would be very visible.

3.Line the train with a fabric that will glide well over the floor. If possible, use fabric that matches the outer part of the train. That way, nobody will notice if the train turns over on itself a bit. To help give the train structure, consider using piping along its edge where it’s seamed to the lining.

4.Sew the hook and eye fasteners into place. Start with one at each side and one in the middle. Keep adding fasteners in the middle of the remaining sections until there are enough to hold up the train without pulling on the dress too much. In this case, more is better. If the train is still putting too much stress on the fabric of the dress, add a waistline stay to the inside of the dress. This will give the train something more rigid to hold on to.

5.Embellish the train as desired. The idea here is to make it look like part of the original dress and not like a detachable piece. This is an excellent place on which to have custom touches. When Sarah Ferguson married Prince Andrew, she had the letter ‘A’ in seed pearls sewn on her detachable train.

How to choose informal wedding dresses

A wedding dress reflects the style of each individual bride. One bride may prefer a dress covered in lace with a veil and a train. Searching for an informal wedding dress can be a bit of a pain, but there are tons of dresses out there for you to choose from, you just have to know where to look. Shop at online wedding dress shops. They don’t all carry dresses that are incredibly informal, but some do have very nice dresses that can be perfect for a beach or destination wedding.

1. Write down some ideas that you see on the street, or in the stores, that combine to make up your perfect informal wedding dress. Do a search online, or call around to professional shops that can help you find wedding dresses in those styles. Choose a length. Casual doesn’t necessarily mean short. An informal wedding dress often reaches anywhere from the top of the knees to below the ankles. A shorter skirt allows you to show off your legs. A dress that falls to mid-calf helps add height, yet still looks casual.

2. Evaluate color choices. An informal wedding dress can be any color you want. A informal wedding dress that is not white or ivory. There are many lines of designer dresses that are beautiful deep reds, pinks and metallic colors. You can find an evening dress in a style that compliments your shape and can become a wonderful fine dining dress in the future.

4.Investigate available details. Some dresses are sleek with no additional ornamentation. Other dresses may have intricate patterns sewn on as well as added beads, sequins, rhinestones or seed pearls. An informal dress can still have details that express your personality. Consider adding intricate facets to one part of the dress, such as the shoulders or the waistline, while leaving the rest of the dress plain. You can research accessories. Tiara, jewelry, hair ornaments and the shawl you choose will all add to the effect you’re trying to create.

How to Attach a Train to a Wedding Dress?

Some formal dress designs are extremely popular. This popularity can create problems for women who want to stand out in the crowd and be the center of attention. You can alter your formal dress by adding a detachable tulle train to add a touch of elegance that will set you apart from anyone else that happens to be wearing the same dress design. Detachable trains are ideal for formal dresses because they are easy to remove for dancing, which is something you are likely to attempt while you are wearing your dress in most circumstances.

  1. Look for hooks or buttons sewn on the back of your dress at the waist. They will likely be covered in white thread or fabric so they won’t stand out. Find the length between the waistline and where you would like the bottom of the train. Cut two pieces of tulle the length of this measurement. Lay one piece of tulle on top of the other piece.
  2. Stitch the two pieces of tulle together along the top edge of the fabric. Grab the top right corner of the fabric and pull it to the middle of the fabric.
  3. Divide your waist measurement in half and measure this length of ribbon. Cut the ribbon and fold the top horizontal edge of the ribbon down to the bottom horizontal edge.Position the stitched top edge of the tulle against the fold crease inside the fold.
  4. Stitch the bottom edge of the ribbon and stitch the hooks on the ends of the ribbon. Set the ribbon against the fabric of the dress around your waistline by the small of your back.
  5. Pull the pins out and set them aside. Sew the eyes to the back of the dress by hand and push the hooks through the eyes.

How to Choose A Informal Wedding Dresses

A wedding dress reflects the style of each individual bride. One bride may prefer a dress covered in lace with a veil and a train. Another may prefer something less formal. If you are in the latter category, finding a dress can be a challenge. Fortunately, informal wedding dresses are available in many sizes and patterns.

Instructions

1
Choose a length. Casual doesn’t necessarily mean short. An informal wedding dress often reaches anywhere from the top of the knees to below the ankles. A shorter skirt allows you to show off your legs. A dress that falls to mid-calf helps add height, yet still looks casual.

2
Compare fabrics. Wedding dresses are available in many differing fabrics. Certain fabrics, such as damask, lace and velvet, are associated with more formal occasions. If you’re aiming for a lighter look, consider fabrics with a less heavy feel such as cotton, linen and jersey.

3
Evaluate color choices. An informal wedding dress can be any color you want. If this is not your first wedding, consider shades that are meaningful to you or flattering to your features. If you have dark blue eyes, for example, choose a dress that will bring attention to them. If you still like white, consider a more muted shade. Dresses in ivory, seashell, beige, tan and cream make it clear that you are still the bride.

4
Investigate available details.

5
Research accessories. Shoes, jewelry, hair ornaments and the stockings you choose will all add to the effect you’re trying to create. If you’re aiming for simplicity, a pair of understated low-heeled peep-toes can be coupled with sheer pantyhose and a thin veil made of netting.

6
Work with your body type. If you are tall and thin, create a casual look with a figure flattering sheath or classic A-line dress. If you are shorter or more voluptuous, emphasize informality with the use of a simple princess silhouette

Tips on Wearing a Revealing Wedding Gown in Church

The trend these days is for wedding dresses to be daring and revealing. While these dresses are very beautiful, they may be inappropriate for a church wedding; however, a bride may still want to wear such a wedding dress, especially for the reception. To avoid having to purchase two dresses, there are ways to wear your revealing wedding gown in church.

http://www.periimg.com/M/20156152.jpg

(Essense) Wedding Dress Style D1027

  • Speak to the church clergy to find out what kind of dress is allowed in the church. Some will require that you cover up to your neck and not wear bare arms. Other churches are okay with a strapless dress. This will help you plan your dress accordingly.
  • Choose a simple dress that will allow you to wear a jacket or shrug layered over it.It can still be embellished, but cannot be bulky in the upper portion because your covering won’t lie properly.
  • Choose a cover-up for your wedding dress. There are wedding shrugs that cover the upper back and arms. There are wedding jackets that can cover the upper part of the dress and may even button all the way up the neck. There are wedding coats that can cover the entire dress and reveal a completely different look when taken off.
  • Make sure that your wedding dress cover-up is an integral part of the wedding dress and does not look awkward or as though it’s an after thought. If you choose a shrug, or wedding jacket, have it beaded or a lace overlay added to match the pattern on the wedding dress. This way, when it is being worn, no one will be able to tell that it is a separate piece. Consider having a jacket overlay made that not only covers the chest, back and shoulders, but also creates a chapel train for the dress, you can create a really long and elaborate train this way. After the wedding ceremony, you can remove it, revealing a reception dress that you can move freely in.
  • Add invisible eye hooks to attach your wedding dress cover-up to your wedding dress. This way, it will stay in place and not move or shift while you are wearing it.
