Most flower girls are between the ages of 3 and 8. As a bridal attendant, the flower girl’s job is to look adorable while carrying flowers or scattering flower petals down the aisle. She is often one of the bride’s relatives.
Attire
The flower girl wears either a long or short dress that complements the dresses of the bridesmaids. Since her dress must be age-appropriate, she usually does not wear the same style as the attendants. Typically her dress is white, ivory, a pastel or another color that does not clash with the other dresses. So, for example, if the bridesmaids dresses are blue, the flower girl may wear a blue dress or a white dress with a blue sash in the fabric that matches the other dresses. The parents of the flower girl buy her outfit.
Flowers
The flower girl carries a single flower, a basket of flowers, a bouquet of flowers or a pomander, a mixture of nice-smelling substances tied together to form a ball. Alternatively, she may scatter confetti, blow bubbles or carry a wrapped candle. After the processional, a fidgety child may sit with her parents. The wedding planner should try to seat her family near the front so that she can see them and be boosted by their presence. If the girl can stand attentively, she can take her place at the altar with the other bridal attendants.
Preparation
It is a good idea for the flower girl to practice at home under adult supervision. Make this practice a game so it will be fun and praise her when she does her job well, suggests the book “Bridal Guide Magazine’s New Etiquette for Today’s Bride.”
Gift for the Flower Girl
Among suggested gifts from the bride to the flower girl are a jewelry box, a child’s purse, a necklace, earrings or a monogrammed picture frame.
